Exploring space: Movement and Sports

In this course we look at the different movement modalities in depth for students aged 12 and above. We will explore the parallels, similarities and differences between Bothmer Gymnastics and Eurythmy, and discover why both are vital for the healthy development of the human being.

Bothmer Movement came into being through the work of Fritz von Bothmer, the first PE teacher in the first Waldorf school. In long hours researching the qualities of space, he became aware of how creative, spiritual forces work upon the human body. Through practicing Bothmer Movement the growing adolescent can learn to live in the three-dimensional earthly space without becoming imprisoned in the physical, material world. 

In Eurythmy, movements are choreographed to correspond with specific sounds, tones, or words. It is a way of bringing harmony and balance to the body, mind, and soul. Through eurythmy, children learn to express themselves through movement, while also developing their listening skills, concentration and coordination.

Susan Kelly is passionate about movement, games and the outdoors and has worked in mainstream schools and alternative educational settings. Susan has been teaching PE, Games and Bothmer Movement for over 20 years and currently works at St Michael Steiner School in London. 

Diana Constantin Skinner holds a MA in Eurythmy in Education and is qualified as a class teacher and eurythmist; she also has considerable experience as a eurythmy performer and therapist. Diana has been teaching, performing and giving workshops for children and adults internationally for over 25 years. She is also a tutor at the London Steiner Waldorf Early Childhood Training Course and the eurythmy teacher at St. Paul’s Steiner School in London.
